Client Acquitted in Major Drugs Importation Case at Chelmsford Crown Court

By 10 July 2025No Comments2 min read

We are delighted to announce the acquittal of our client (RC), at Chelmford Crown Court following a high-profile trial which concluded on 8 July 2025.

RC faced an allegation of knowingly importing 116.54 kg of cocaine, with an estimated street value of £7.9 million, which was discovered secreted within the rear doors of a refrigerated lorry. He had spent 16 months on remand before our firm was instructed, just two weeks prior to the scheduled trial date.

Upon instruction, Emma Lambie took immediate action, visiting RC in custody and conducting a thorough review of the case. It became clear that crucial evidence, including downloads from two mobile phones seized at the time of arrest, had not been requested by previous solicitors. This material was obtained and translated, proving vital to the defence. A new defence statement was prepared to accurately reflect our clients instructions and to address inaccuracies in earlier documents. Thanks to urgent and meticulous preparation, and the outstanding advocacy of Ruth Zentler-Munro of 15 New Bridge Street Chambers, the jury returned a unanimous not guilty verdict after just 14 minutes of deliberation. RC was immediately released from custody and reunited with his family.

This result highlights the importance of proactive and diligent defence work, particularly when instructed at a late stage. We are proud to have secured justice for our client and to have supported him and his family through this challenging period.
