Iceland for Alzheimer’s Research UK

Dear all,

It is with a heavy heart that I announce we have had to postpone our highly anticipated Iceland trek, which was scheduled for this November.

As many of you know, our team has been diligently preparing and fundraising for Alzheimer’s Research UK this year, a cause that is deeply personal to me since my mum was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in 2023.

Last Sunday, I decided to relive a childhood memory with my 3 year old son and give roller skating another go. I was pretty good back then… but it turns out that 30 odd years later, my skills haven’t exactly improved! Unfortunately, I fell and broke my ankle in three places. It was a traumatic experience, to say the least. After an ambulance ride and a trip to A&E, it was determined that I needed surgery. A few days later, after some of the swelling had subsided, I underwent a 5-hour operation to have metal plates screwed into my ankle.

Needless to say, I am devastated.

The decision to push back the trek was incredibly difficult. I offered to step down, but my incredible team stood by me, proving that there truly is no “I” in team. Together, we decided to postpone the trek to next year. This will give us time to continue fundraising, training, and for me to focus on my recovery with the unwavering support of my Murray Hughman team, friends, family and no doubt a physiotherapist or two.

Thank you to everyone who has supported our journey so far. I’m looking forward to future events where we can catch up with friends, colleagues, and supporters.

Recovery won’t be easy, and there will be tough, painful days ahead. But I am determined to regain my strength—not only to enjoy safe activities with my son but also to complete this trek and continue supporting a cause so close to my heart.

Looking on the bright side, this delay gives us even more time to organise wonderful events and raise more vital funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Every additional day is an opportunity to make a bigger impact, and I am excited about what we can achieve together in the months ahead.

I’ll be sharing updates on our progress and next steps soon.

Thank you again for your continued support!
