Acquittal at Wood Green Crown Court following Conspiracy to Kidnap and Blackmail Trial

By 20 February 2025No Comments2 min read

We are thrilled to announce a significant victory for our client, achieved through the dedicated efforts of Melissa Ansah and Brendan McGahan of this firm. This triumph marks the conclusion of a challenging and protracted legal battle.

Our client was one of four defendants facing grave charges of Conspiracy to Kidnap and Conspiracy to Blackmail at Wood Green Crown Court. These indictable only offences carry severe penalties. Conspiracy to Kidnap potentially carries a life sentence and Conspiracy to Blackmail carries a maximum sentence of 14 years. The gravity of these charges placed immense pressure on all involved. Despite this, our client steadfastly maintained his innocence from the outset.

The Case

The trial stemmed from an arrest in the latter half of 2023. Throughout this time our client had endured strict bail conditions, a period on remand and an adjourned trial in the summer of 2024.

The allegations suggested that our client and his co-defendants conspired to kidnap and blackmail a young woman to recover approximately £100,000 in drug money.

The prosecution presented extensive evidence, including recorded calls and CCTV. However, the case against our client was particularly weak. It relied heavily on his association with his co-defendants and vague text messages between parties.

Conclusion

After over a year of anticipation, the jury took just over two hours to deliver a not guilty verdict for all parties on both counts. Our client can now look forward to moving on with his life.

Congratulations to Melissa Ansah, Brendan McGaghan and Redmond Traynor of 2 Hare Court for their exceptional work and advocacy throughout these proceedings. Their commitment and expertise were instrumental in securing this favourable outcome for our client.
